After watching the SVU power couple tie the knot in Season 24 of SVU, they relished in watching Rollins and Carisi’s family grow. They welcomed a baby in Season 25 of SVU and have reunited within the precinct as Rollins returns to her former post at the SVU in Season 27 of the nail-biter. But Rollins and Carisi have been settling into a lovely groove as they get reacclimated at the SVU, celebrating their second anniversary together at the top of SVU’s January 22 episode.

However, the return of an iconic SVU villain threw a wrench in the happy couple’s harmony as their date night came to an end. Here’s what happened:

Amanda Rollins and Sonny Carisi’s date night out for their anniversary took a terrifying turn on Law & Order: SVU

Rollins was a tad tardy to her dinner date with Carisi, but well-versed in the comings and goings of the SVU, he didn’t sweat it as he welcomed his wife and poured them a glass of wine. Carisi commended Rollins for her recent upswing, taking note of her happiness and renewed purpose ever since returning to the 16th precinct. Rollins and Carisi raised a glass to Rollins’ return and the couple’s second year of marriage, soon heading home to enjoy a rare night alone since their three kids were with the grandparents in Staten Island.

However, just as Carisi dismissed himself for a quick shower, Rollins clocked signs of a home invasion, soon finding her husband being held at knifepoint by a masked assailant. While Carisi and Rollins were able to briefly take down the perp, he got away in a getaway car, leaving Rollins and Carisi rattled by the traumatizing ordeal.

Rollins became obsessed with tracking down Henry Mesner’s puppet

Rollins didn’t handle the harrowing attack well, instantly diving into the investigation to avoid the turbulent emotions of the attack. Rollins and Carisi considered who would have enough of an issue to target them, and as more high-profile members of the justice system began to be targeted, they realized they were looking at a highly orchestrated attack. Captain Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) encouraged Rollins to take a step away from the case, to no avail.

After combing through all of the potential assailants with beef on Rollins, she had a lightbulb moment: everyone targeted was involved in the imprisonment of Henry Mesner (Ethan Cutkosky), a repeat villain for the squad. Knowing she holds a strange power over the tenured psychopath, Rollins wanted to visit Henry in prison to get to the bottom of it, but Benson cautioned against this.

Benson soon realized that Henry was pulling manipulative strings from beyond bars after an obsessed fan reached out to help him enact revenge. But tracking down this sadistic puppet was an impossible task, and after Rollins began to escalate interrogations, Benson took her off the case. Stubborn to get to the bottom of it, and knowing Henry was the key, Rollins then went behind Benson’s back to speak with her formidable foe in prison.

Henry’s strange fixation on Rollins hadn’t faded as she paid the sinister psychopath a visit to play mind games and get a potential name. Henry was much more forthcoming with Rollins than Benson, especially after making the SVU Sergeant “promise — really promise” to visit him in prison occasionally in exchange for intel. Rollins pretended to agree to Henry’s request, gaining what she needed to secure an arrest.

Captain Benson was less than thrilled with the defiance, but Rollins had become a woman possessed to protect her family and end Henry Mesner’s reign once and for all. As Henry waited for a potential visit from Rollins, it was clear she never intended to comply with his sick request.
