Did this ‘Yellowstone’ spinoff kill off a major character?
The upcoming “Yellowstone” spinoff “Marshals” focuses on Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) — and some fans think the new series killed off a major character from Kayce’s past.
At the end of “Yellowstone,” which aired from 2018 to 2024, Kayce’s wife, Monica (Kelsey Asbille), was alive and well. So, why is there no sign of her in the “Marshals” trailer? And why isn’t Asbille on the spinoff’s cast list?
The trailer for “Marshals” seemingly implies that Monica died after the events of “Yellowstone.” One scene shows Kayce and his son Tate (Brecken Merrill) watching as a body is covered up with a sheet in their home.

“The only thing I ever wanted was taken from me,” Kayce says in the teaser for the new series, which premieres on CBS March 1.
On a Reddit thread discussing the trailer, one viewer wrote that it “seems pretty obvious” Monica “dies in the opening episode” of “Marshals.”
“I am not happy that they killed off Monica at all,” another fan commented. “They prob had to for the premise of the show, I just think it’s a bad decision.”

During a June 2025 interview with People, Grimes hinted that there would be no story for “Marshals” if Kayce’s life were rosy.
“We definitely wanted to make sure to give it a real story and make it interesting and make it believable. If it was just like, ‘Well, he’s happy’ — we’re just going to watch him be happy? That’s not very cool,” he said. “But I’ll say this, the idea that was pitched to me is very, very good and very interesting and it really roped me in and I think it will rope the audience in as well.”
As the title suggests, “Marshals” follows Kayce as he joins a specialized group of U.S. Marshals tasked with protecting Montana. In addition to Grimes and Merrill, the show will star “Yellowstone” alums Gil Birmingham (Thomas Rainwater) and Mo Brings Plenty (Mo) and newcomers Arielle Kebbel (Belle Skinner), Ash Santos (Andrea Cruz), Tatanka Means (Miles Kittle) and Logan Marshall-Green (Pete Calvin).
