What Happened to Mehcad Brooks’ Character on ‘Law & Order’?

The 27th Precinct is down one of its detectives as Season 25 of “Law & Order” gets underway.

Mehcad Brooks has officially left the franchise, and his character, Detective Jalen Shaw, is no longer working with Lt. Jessica Brady (Maura Tierney) and Detective Vincent Riley (Reid Scott).

Deadline first reported the news of Brooks’ departure in July. While the actor does not appear in the Sept. 25 premiere, the episode reveals the character’s fate.

What Happened to Detective Jalen Shaw on ‘Law & Order’

“I just spoke to Shaw,” Brady tells Riley, who was formerly partners with Shaw, in the Sept. 25 episode.

“Something opened up over at the 8-8, and he’s going to take it,” she says, referencing the New York City Police Department’s 88th Precinct.

“I knew he wanted to get back to Brooklyn,” Riley responds. “So good for him.”

“I’m going to miss that guy, though,” he adds, smiling.

Shaw first appeared on “Law & Order: Organized Crime” as part of a crossover series of episodes with the mothership and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” in 2022.

At the time, he worked for the 32nd Precinct and offered his assistance solving the case of a murdered girl, noting he was new to homicide and had spent the previous five years working in narcotics. He also had practiced law for three years after graduating from NYU before pivoting and enrolling in the police academy.

He joined the 27th Precinct after the case and was partnered up with Frank Cosgrove, played by Jeffrey Donovan. Donovan left the show after Season 22.

Scott replaced Donovan, and Riley and Shaw worked under Lt. Kate Dixon (Camryn Manheim) until her departure following Season 23. Tierney replaced her as the team’s lieutenant.

Why Did Mehcad Brooks Leave ‘Law & Order’?

It’s unclear why Brooks exited “Law & Order.”

His character replaced Detective Kevin Bernard, who was played by Anthony Anderson on both the original run of the series and its return in 2022 after 12 years off the air. Anderson left after that return season concluded.

During Brooks’ time filming the crossover event, he had the chance to film scenes with “SVU” legend Mariska Hargitay. Before that, he guest-starred on an episode of the series in 2011. Brooks previously told TODAY.com in 2022 that he and Hargitay both “hit it off at that moment.”

“So, Mariska is the kind of person — I told her that my brother is the biggest ‘SVU’ fan in the world,” he said, adding that Hargitay then asked him for his brother’s number.

Brooks said Hargitay called his brother “out of the blue” a few months later to talk to him.

“My brother is going to remember that the rest of his life, and so that’s who she is,” he said. “She’s a legend in our house.”
