Ice-T Gets Candid About His Future on ‘Law & Order: SVU’

Ice-T’s screen time on ‘Law & Order: SVU’ decreased due to cast and budget changes.

He confirmed he isn’t leaving and wants to continue into season 28.

Kelli Giddish returned as main cast.

Ice-T is getting candid about his future on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

During a January 6 interview with Us Weekly at the Law & Order 25th Anniversary Celebration, Ice-T said he would like to continue starring in the long-running NBC procedural. He also referenced that he filmed less as his character, Odafin “Fin” Tutuola, for the show’s current 27th season.

“This year, they took my workload down, which is cool. I got a lot of things. I started my own network, I got other things going. But I was like, ‘Well, are you getting rid of me?’ They’re like, ‘No, no, no.’ I said, ‘Because I want to get to season 28,’” said Ice-T during the Us Weekly interview.

The rapper, who joined the Law & Order: SVU cast during its second season, which premiered in 2000, said he believes the show could “make it to season 30.” He said he thinks “as long as Mariska [Hargitay],” who stars as Captain Olivia Benson and is one of the show’s executive producers, “wants to keep doing it,” the series will stay on air.

Ice-T Explained Why His Character Has Less Screen Time on ‘Law & Order: SVU’

Ice-T explained why he didn’t film as much for Law & Order: SVU season 27 during a November 2025 interview with TMZ. He noted that Kelli Giddish, who plays Detective Amanda Rollins, came back as a main cast member on the series after leaving following season 24.

“It’s basically business. They brought Kelli [Giddish] back, and at the end of the day, they couldn’t really keep both of us on full-time, as far as budget-wise. They said, ‘Okay, Ice, we’ll bring you in and out this year,’” said Ice-T during the TMZ interview.

He clarified that he was not upset about the decision.

Mariska Hargitay, Peter Scanavino, Dick Wolf, Kelli Giddish, Ice-T, and Philip Winchester pose together in 2018.

“Everybody wanted Kelli back. We’ve got new cops. I am not leaving the show. I am more concerned with going to Season 28. This year, they said, ‘Ice, we’re going to work you a little less.’ Everything was cool with me. I understood,” said Ice-T to the publication.

Giddish shared her thoughts about playing Rollins again for season 27 in an August 2025 interview with Extra TV.

“I’m back as a series regular and I couldn’t be happier about it. It feels right. I got the offer and I was like, ‘Yeah, of course, of course. I can’t wait to come back,’” said Giddish to Extra TV.

In addition, she said she was looking forward to working with the new showrunner of Law & Order: SVUMichele Fazekas.

“That’s going to be exciting to see what she puts on the page for us to play with. It feels revitalized in a whole new way even though it’s season 27,” said the actress while speaking to the publication.

In addition, she suggested she was pleased to reunite on-screen with Hargitay, whom she described as her friend.

“I love her to death and I’m so happy to know her as like one of the strong female roles in my personal life,” said Giddish during the August 2025 interview.
