A Single Throwaway Beth Dutton Scene Quietly Spoiled Yellowstone’s Ending 5 Years Earlier

Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) foreshadows Yellowstone Season 5’s ending five years earlier, in a throwaway scene that looks like dozens of others in passing. Beth is the only daughter of Evelyn (Gretchen Mol) and John Dutton (Kevin Costner), who grew up alongside Jamie (Wes Bentley), Lee (Dave Annabel), and Kayce Dutton at the Yellowstone Ranch.

While Beth learns to get along with Kayce, her sibling rivalry with Jamie defines Yellowstone. It comes to a head in the series finale after John Dutton’s funeral, when Beth finally gets revenge on her adopted sibling for betraying their father. While some fans were disappointed by how Yellowstone ended, Beth spelled out a pattern years earlier.

Beth Dutton’s Throwaway Scene In Yellowstone Season 2 Explained

In Yellowstone Season 2, Episode 4, Beth foreshadows exactly how she plans to take down her brother. Attorney General-elect Cassidy Reid (Kelly Rohrbach) is at the lodge as John, Beth, and Jamie discuss several pending legal issues. Jamie is in hot water with his family due to betraying John’s wishes, and Beth takes it out on him at dinner.

Jamie defies their father’s instructions, running for Montana’s attorney general despite John Dutton’s opposition. Bentley’s Yellowstone character, therefore, alienates himself from his family and betrays his dad’s trust. Beth takes Jamie’s betrayal exceptionally hard, having been there for her dad when her brother moved out of the house and worked against the Dutton family tree.

How Beth’s Dinner Table Scene Foreshadows Jamie’s Yellowstone Season 5 Fate

Over the course of Yellowstone’s five seasons, Beth Dutton disrupted plenty of family meals. Traumatized by her mother’s death and her brother’s betrayal, Beth had a roundabout way of airing her grievances. She would often use the dinner table to work out pent-up emotions, and her jabbing Jamie with a butter knife is a perfect example.

That said, the scene also foreshadows Jamie’s fate in Yellowstone Season 5. In the final episode of Taylor Sheridan’s original Yellowstone series, Beth stabs Jamie with a knife after her father’s funeral, murdering him for working with Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri) and betraying John Dutton yet again. It’s one of the finale’s most important scenes, and perhaps misunderstood.

Some were disappointed there wasn’t a more epic moment to close out the rivalry, but the death fits Beth’s MO. Jamie wasn’t an epic villain for Beth to slay. He was a problem she needed to handle. Beth’s lack of effort and ceremony for Jamie’s death is the final insult, not giving Jamie’s death a chance to matter.

Beth Isn’t Off The Hook For Murdering Jamie Dutton In Yellowstone

Beth redirected suspicion at the end of Yellowstone Season 5, pointing the detectives investigating her father’s death and Jamie’s disappearance in the direction of Sarah Atwood. However, it’s not for sure that Beth is in the clear about Jamie’s murder, as new evidence could arise and link her to her brother’s death, though they will probably never find his body.

While the Dutton family has gotten away with likely hundreds of murders throughout their time in Montana, most of the crimes are swept under the rug and never reported. Beth’s call to the police about Jamie’s disappearance sets in motion a legal process that will continue unfolding, making John’s daughter vulnerable to future ramifications as information rises to the surface.

If her story had ended in Yellowstone Season 5’s finale, then perhaps Beth Dutton fans could breathe a sigh of relief that John’s daughter had evaded law enforcement for good. Since Beth and Rip’s (Cole Hauser) story will continue in their own spinoff, The Dutton Ranch, however, fans can’t rule out that Beth’s crimes will catch up to her eventually.
