Ali Larter Sets The Record Straight On Taylor Sheridan’s Presence On The ‘Landman’ Season 2 Set

How many times did Taylor Sheridan drop in to check on Landman during Season 2? The answer might surprise you. Then again… if you know anything about Taylor Sheridan’s workload, maybe it won’t surprise you.

It’s no secret that the Yellowstone creator is one of the most sought after minds in Hollywood. Because it seems as though everything he touches turns to gold (or at least brings in massive ratings), there’s not an entertainment executive out there that doesn’t want a cut of the Taylor Sheridan pie. That obviously makes him a very busy person. Sheridan has a ton of plates currently spinning, and he’ll soon have even more thanks to a billion dollar deal that will move him from Paramount to NBCUniversal at the beginning of 2029. That’ll be a big loss for Paramount, especially when you look at some of the shows that Sheridan brought to the company:

-The Last Cowboy

-Finestkind

-Mayor of Kingstown

-1883 (Yellowstone spinoff)

-1923 (Yellowstone spinoff)

-Lawmen: Bass Reeves (Yellowstone spinoff)

-Tulsa King

-Lioness

-Landman

And those are just his Paramount+ originals. That list doesn’t include the biggest project of them all – Yellowstone – or any of his very successful movies like Sicario or Wind River. But it does include one of his latest hits, Landman, which just wrapped up it’s second season.

Fans were calling the series unwatchable at certain points, but many viewers believe the last two episode of Season 2 (especially the finale) saved Landman. And it might not even be right to say it like that, considering it has long been renewed for a third season.

What went awry for Season 2 of the Billy Bob Thornton-led show? Well, it may have something to do with the fact that Taylor Sheridan wasn’t on set a lot. Then again, he’s the one that often writes the scripts for his shows solo (he prefers to do it that way), so there’s a good chance what he put on paper is what ended up on the screen.

Ali Larter, who plays Angela in the show, told People that Taylor Sheridan is more hands off with the production of his shows than people might think. Specifically, she revealed that the Yellowstone creator and co-creator of Landman was on set for Season 2 less than five times:

“Taylor was only on set three times this year. He was there for the white truffle scene (in the first episode), because he’s going to make sure that things are going the way he wants… he kind of just let the train barrel ahead.”

Ali Larter culture

Why does Sheridan choose to take a backseat when his shows get rolling? Well, one of the main reasons would have to be that there’s not enough Taylor Sheridan to go around. I’m sure he’d love to be heavily involved in the production of all of his shows, but that’d be physically impossible. Plus, he’s always got a script that he needs to work on, so I’m sure the 55-year-old focuses more on that then being on set to see his work come to life.

That requires a lot of trust in others, and most of that trust landed on director Stephen Kay for Landman Season 2. He directed all 10 episodes this season, and Ali Larter had nothing but praise for the man behind the camera:

“He is such a gift to the show. He’s so immensely talented.”

For reference, Taylor Sheridan directed the first two episodes of Season 1 of Landman. After that, he entrusted both Michael Friedman and Stephen Kay to take over directing duties. Sheridan was evidently so impressed with Kay’s work in the first season that he gave him the keys to direct the entirety of Season 2.

And being able to trust Kay undoubtedly bought a lot of time for Sheridan to tackle all of the other things he’s got on his plate… and just to paint a picture for you, Taylor’s plate looks like a plate that just visited the buffet. It’s packed full and its contents are towering. He obviously has to have some help taking care of it all, which is why it makes sense that his physical time on sets is limited.
