Coronation Street’s ‘most hated character’ extends soap contract but fans will be livid
A Coronation Street villain has revealed their future on the long-running ITV soap but fans will not be happy.
Beth Nixon made her debut this year as Megan, the athletics coach of youngster Will Driscoll (Lucas Hodgson-Wale). However, it was later revealed that Megan has been grooming 16-year-old Will for months, prior to his move to the cobbles.
Their secret relationship has gone unnoticed so far and Will’s family are none the wiser about Megan’s true colours, including dad Ben (Aaron McCusker), grandmother Maggie (Pauline McLynn) and his dad’s girlfriend Eva Price (Catherine Tyldesley).
In recent weeks, Megan moved to the cobbles too, and bagged a job at Weatherfield High School. She has also struck up a romance with fellow teacher Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard) – much to Will’s anger and jealousy.
As expected, fans have been left sickened by the shock grooming twist, with Megan quickly becoming one of the soap’s most hated characters. But it seems Megan’s reign of terror is not coming to an end soon, as actress Beth has issued an update on her future on the show.
Talking to York College in December, Beth – who hails from York – discussed joining Corrie, and revealed it is her first-ever TV job since graduating from college a few years ago.
Speaking about landing the role, Beth said: “Earlier this year, my agent sent me a casting brief and explained it was for a paedophile, which is a bit crazy to play because they’re obviously not a redeemable character, so they can push it pretty far.”
And despite the controversial storyline, it seems that Megan is going nowhere. Beth, who worked as a waitress “for years”, shared with the publication that her initial six-month contract has been renewed.
Beth also spoke about raising awareness of the subject matter, which is sometimes glamourised in society. She said: “It creates a lot of debate, because a lot of people say, ‘It’s a 15-year-old boy’s dream’ but, if you flip it the other way round, it’s always seen as disgusting.
“If it’s a storyline that makes one person recognise that this is happening to them and it’s wrong, then it has done its job.”
