EastEnders airs groundbreaking Nigel Bates cliffhanger in early iPlayer release
EastEnders has aired the sensational return of an iconic character, as Nigel Bates’ dementia storyline takes centre stage on Christmas week. The final scene sets up a very special episode that will take viewers back to the ’90s, with Nigel’s condition continuing to deteriorate.
In today’s episode, as the community was preparing to hold a screening of Nigel’s Christmas film, Julie was reluctantly looking into care options for her husband – shaken by the recent incident where Nigel accidentally hit her and caused a black eye.
Phil caught her making enquiries over the phone and was furious, refusing to break the promise to his friend and insisting that he will continue to look after him.
When they later had a calmer conversation, Phil tried to argue that Nigel was still well enough not to need external care, but Julie knew that her husband was getting worse.

Nigel got suited and booted for his screening at the community centre, but he had to be cleaned up when he wet himself – and Phil was left with a lot to think about.
At the screening, Nigel stood up to make a speech before his movie was played. His words went down well, but he got confused and Julie had to help him find his place.
It was then that Nigel spotted Julie’s black eye, and when he asked how this happened, she admitted that it was him who caused her injury.

Overwhelmed Nigel stormed off, and Julie and Phil rushed outside to find him. They soon began arguing, but Nigel overheard everything and he confronted them when they mentioned care homes.
He was scared about the prospect of living somewhere else, and while Phil tried to calm him down, Nigel said that he wanted to be alone for a while.
Nigel wandered off alone and soon got very confused about where he was, trying and failing to get a taxi to get him home.

He then walked into The Vic, but Nigel was hallucinating and imagined the pub from decades past. It wasn’t long before he bumped into a familiar and dearly departed face: icon Pat Evans.
Pat’s sensational return will lead into tomorrow’s standalone episode, where Nigel meets faces from his past as he struggles to decipher reality…
