Kevin Costner finally has a replacement for his role as John Dutton III in Yellowstone, and the new Western show continues one of the actor’s longest career trends. Since Kevin Costner left Yellowstone midway through season 5, many fans have been wondering if he can find a replacement for Taylor Sheridan’s wildly successful Western series. Costner has tried to find his own replacement through Horizon: An American Saga, but that effort fell short.

Now, Costner has another upcoming Western project that not only serves as a Yellowstone replacement, but also as proof that he’s sticking with one of his oldest trends as a movie maker. Costner is producing The Gray House, a Western series for Prime Video. While he won’t be acting in The Gray House, Costner’s upcoming show is still worth learning about, and it reveals an important fact about the future of his career.

What Is The Gray House About?

Kevin Costner is set to co-produce (alongside Morgan Freeman) Prime Video’s upcoming Western TV show The Gray House, which is set to premiere on February 26, 2026. Early images of The Gray House reveal that the show is based on a real group of women who were involved in both the Underground Railroad and a spy ring that gave Confederate secrets to the Union and helped “turn the tide” of the Civil War (via Deadline).

While Costner won’t be acting in The Gray House, his role as an executive producer should be evident in the series. Like many of Costner’s previous Western projects, The Gray House is set during the American Civil War and is based on real-life history. It also gives Costner a chance to work with several notable stars, including Mary-Louise Parker, Daisy Head, and Paul Anderson.

The Gray House Continues Kevin Costner’s Western Tradition

The Gray House also continues one of Kevin Costner’s oldest traditions: it’s another Western under his belt. Costner has long been a star of the Western genre, since he starred in Silverado in 1985. Some of Costner’s best Western movies are also his best movies in general, including Dances with WolvesOpen Range, and Horizon: An American Saga. He’s even dominated Westerns on the small screen through Yellowstone and Hatfields & McCoys.

Kevin Costner Is Not Done With Westerns

As previously mentioned, The Gray House is also proof that Kevin Costner isn’t done with Westerns yet. Costner rather infamously had a debacle with his Horizon: An American Saga movie franchise. Horizon was originally envisioned as a four-part epic, but after the first installment severely underperformed at the box office, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 was screened at the Venice Film Festival but never received a wide release.
